Why Your Creative Business Is Stuck

(And How To Fix It)

"Other people charge way more for the same work!" is a challenge I hear constantly from those running creative services businesses. I get it. Your work is great. You're working with clients and solving real problems, and you're starting to see some growth, but you're overwhelmed because you can't seem to get enough pricing leverage to make this thing sustainable.

Businesses don't just grow, they mature. It seems obvious to say, but your business isn't going to grow until it gets better.

The 3 Levels of Maturity

These three levels of maturity help to serve as a measure for your delivery as a creative services business. These are qualitative, and require you to be self-reflective about how your clients truly feel about your services to the best of your ability.

Level 1: Service

Service could be defined as the minimum you need to be doing to sustainably make money as a creative services business. It’s the table stakes. If you aren’t at this level, you’re likely going to have a hard time charging a sustainable amount of money for your services and as a result it will be hard to stay in business.

Level 2: Hospitality

Hospitality is about proactivity. Think about a fantastic experience you’ve had at a restaurant, and it usually looks like someone serving you before you even know that you need to be served. As human beings, we love to feel safe, and good hospitality means that a client isn’t wondering “what’s going on?”

Here, your business can earn some more leverage on your time in pricing because your delivery isn’t just about assets but about meeting your clients’ needs & proactively adjusting to deliver better solutions.

Level 3: Magic

As a creative business matures, it ideally moves toward creating magic. Magic means work that people are emotionally drawn to. It moves your solution beyond a pragmatic solution to a problem (a logo for a business) into one with real emotional resonance. Not only do clients understand what’s going on, they actually trust that your solution will be the right one.

This allows you the greatest leverage in pricing because there is emotional draw toward your product. Your solutions aren’t just the right ones, they are specific and tell a unique story.

Measuring Your Business

We all want to build a business that is better, but the first step toward improvement is developing an understanding of where you’re actually at. This matrix serves as a “scorecard” for the three core operations of a creative business: Work, Process & Experience:

Level 1: Service

Level 2: Hospitality

Level 3: Magic

Work

Clients believe we can do the work. We are capable of delivery and able to adjust as needed to meet their goals.

Clients trust our point of view on the work. We are able to make recommendations that will align with their business’ strategy and goals.

Clients come to us for our work. They aren’t just confident in our ability to deliver work, they are drawn emotionally to the work we do.

Process

Clients are given a basic process. We communicate what our solution to their problem will be, and how we will get there.

Clients understand the process. They are asked for feedback on the process, and it may even be built for their specific project.

Clients fully trust the process. We have communicated so well both their problem and the solution that they feel safe and “along for the ride.”

Client Experience

Clients feel communicated with. Their needs are listened to and acted on.

Clients feel proactively cared for. We are seeing needs before they do and bringing solutions.

Clients feel deeply understood. Solutions feel like they are tailored specifically for them.
